Administrative Office

The Sheep Breeding Farm at Mahabubnagar was originally established as a unit of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of Andhra Pradesh. In 1993, it was brought under the administration of the Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University (APAU) and subsequently renamed as the Livestock Research Station, Mahabubnagar. Following the formation of the state of Telangana in 2014, the station came under the jurisdiction of P.V. Narsimha Rao Telangana Veterinary University (PVNRTVU).

Mandate:

  • To study and improve productive and reproductive performance of Deccani sheep and Mahabubnagar local goats.

  • To supply genetically superior germplasm to the farmers.

  • To carry out studies on the relative merits of intensive, semi-intensive, and extensive sheep and goat rearing systems.

  • To conduct training programs for shepherds in sheep and goat rearing.

Other Activities

  • Farmer’s training programs: Organizing programs to the farmers and livestock entrepreneurs on sheep and goat rearing.
  • Advisory services for farmers, entrepreneurs in sheep and goat rearing and fodder production
  • Preparation and distribution of literature on sheep and goat farming

Achievements (from 2010-2024):

  • Supplied more than 350 Deccani rams
  • Supplied about 5lakh fodder slips of improved fodder varieties
  • Conducted about 50 training programmes on sheep and goat rearing
