
Fisheries Research Station (FRS), Palair was established in the year 1977 to conduct need based research on culture and propagation of cultivable varieties of fish species suitable for aqua farming in the state and to transfer the technology to aqua farmers. The station is located on the National High Way-24 between Hyderabad and Khammam (via Suryapet) at latitude (N 17o 11’ 56.44”) and longitude (E 79o55’ 19.36”).
Mandate:
- Development of Reservoir Fish in general and research on Air Breathing Fishes, Cultivable Fish Varieties, Alternative Fish Species in particular and disseminate the Culture Technologies to the Farmers.
- Dissemination of Scampi culture and Transfer of Technology to Aqua
- Human Resource Development Programmes through Skill Development Programmes to strengthen the Students/ Farmers/ Entrepreneurs/ Rural Youth.

Significant Achievements:
- Successful in dissemination of Mono & Poly Culture Technology for Indian Major Carps (IMC) – Catla, Rohu and Mrigala and Exotic Carps – Grass carp, Silver carp and Common carp.
- Successful in dissemination of Culture Technology of Alternate Fish to IMC (Pungus, Amur Carp, Jayanthi Rohu and Red Tilapia).
- Successful in Induced breeding of IMC and Air Breathing Fish (Channastriatusand Clariusbatrachus).
- Catering to the needs of Aqua farmers through Production and Supply of IMC and Murrel Fish Seed.
- Development of Technologies for Nursery Management of IMC and Exotic Carps from spawn to fry and from fry to finger
- Development of Technologies for Culture of Channa striatus (Murrel) in Aqua Farm Ponds.
- Development of Technologies for Culture of Scampi (Giant Fresh Water Prawn) in Aqua Farm Ponds.
- Development of Best Management Practices (BMP’S) Important Fish Diseases; their Control and Prevention.
- Development of Feed Formulations and Feeding Technology for Indian Major
- Transfer of Better Management practices for doubling the farmer’s income to get sustainable Yield and for Prevention/Control of commonly prevailing Aquatic Animal Diseases.
- Dissemination of Breeding and Culture Technology of Suitable Ornamental Fish species for Telangana.
- Successfully Established the Model Aquaponics Unit, Integrated Fish Farming (IFS) Systems and Bio-floc Aquafarming Demo Unit and Transfer of those technologies to the Telangana Fish farmers.
- Trained around 3600 farmers/fishers/fisherman/fisher women of the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and succeeded in making them as entrepreneur.
- Demonstration on 13 Cultivable Fish verities which suitable for Telangana water bodies.
Supply of Fish Germ plasm:
- Production of Carp& Ornamental fish seed in the Monsoon season of every year and supply of Quality Fish Seed to the Small and Marginal Fish Farmers.
- Distribution to the Fisherman Co-operative Societies through the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Telangana.
