Poultry Research Station, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad

The Poultry Research Station is located at Rajendranagar and is the only station dedicated to poultry research, especially backyard poultry, in Telangana. It was established in 2015, following the closure of the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Poultry Breeding by ICAR-DPR, vide Proc. No. Cir.No.1120/Res/2015-3 dated: 14.05.2015.

Long-Term Objectives:

  • To evolve synthetic strains/varieties of chickens, turkeys, Japanese quails, and coloured backyard poultry suitable for the agro-climatic conditions of Telangana.
  • To undertake research in various disciplines such as poultry genetics and breeding, nutrition, management, disease investigation and diagnosis, and marketing.
  • To establish research linkages with public and private R&D units, livestock development agencies, hatcheries, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries.
  • To use the centre for knowledge dissemination by organizing training programs, workshops, and certificate courses for students, field veterinarians, hatchery personnel, etc.

Short-Term (Immediate) Objectives:

  • Selective breeding of Rajasri birds to improve egg production and supply of chicks (day-old or 4–6 weeks old) to farmers.
  • Strengthening hatchery facilities to meet the growing demand for Rajasri chicks.
  • Organizing training programs for farmers and field veterinarians on management and breeding practices to improve egg production.

Accomplishments:

The Institute has developed  Rajasri — a dual-purpose synthetic variety (White Leghorn, Desi, Dalhem Red, RIR) suitable for backyard rearing. These birds are hardy, thrives under low-input, backyard systems. They are know for its disease resistance & survivability and lay up to 165 eggs/year  under intensive systems or 110–120 eggs under free-range.
